Will You Marry An      Algorithm?

Imagine falling in love with an AI—no heartbreak, no misunderstandings, just pure companionship.

Sounds bizarre? Maybe. But “digital spouse” (1) is already a reality.

Humans are wired for connection. We name our cars, talk to Siri, and feel happy or sad for our favourite characters from TV/movie/OTTs. This deep emotional attachment to non-human entities is what psychologists call parasocial relationships (2)—one-sided emotional bonds that can feel just as real as human interactions.

Now, AI companions are also providing romantic and emotional support and comfort for people feeling loneliness, heartbreak, or shyness. Replika, an AI companion promises to be an empathetic friend who "...would love to see the world through your eyes." (2) while India-based Wysa, dons the hat of an AI therapist and provides mental health support for "individuals, organizations, healthcare providers, and young people" (3).

As the line between AI and humans slowly but steadily gets blurred, it pops an interesting question: Can an algorithm replace human intimacy? While AI can simulate emotional connections, can it truly replicate the depth and spontaneity of human relationships?

Or maybe modern love isn’t just about who or what you love.  Maybe the real question is...

“If it feels real… does it matter?”
